EU regulators are taking a global lead in ensuring companies implement more sustainable business practices. The three areas in focus are often classified as Environment, Social and Governance (ESG). ESG frameworks have for a long time been used by many companies on a voluntary basis, but the increased number and scope of regulations are now shifting ESG to a key concern for European companies globally.
Given the current geopolitical climate, the ESG regulations are often mentioned in relation with trade barriers or similar.

Although sustainability, greenhouse gas emissions reductions and the "green shift" have been high on the agenda for EU governments and foreign missions, the ESG frameworks are more from the company side, and it is highly beneficial for diplomatic staff working in the intersection of private sector and sustainability to understand ESG concepts.
China is also rapidly implementing local ESG regulations which are relevant in an increasing number of dialogues in China.
